It’s a difficult life And the harder I try To ignore my stubborn mind It’s of so little help From every corner it seems Little voices that scream There’s a breath of a chance And there’s hope of romance If I just keep on trying But it’s all in my mind The Biggest Hurdle to Climb Is simply to resign And give up on it now It’s not there Just forget what you’ve done It might hurt But it could be worse I’m like a ball on a string I throw myself out again Only to be hurled back in To the palm of a ghost That I invented myself And imposed upon her words Head down as my eyes Bounce from centre to sides Searching for the line A single magic divide Between the months that I’ve tried And where I should finally cease And give up on it now It’s not there Just forget what you’ve done It might hurt But it could be worse When you’ve tried so hard When you’ve built so much When you’ve tried so hard Just give up I built it up with my hands The most ambitious of plans But it fails and falls again

He is the reason, if any, I cut you some slack Such a weighty straw Dropped from high and with force on our backs You rarely demanded such a high standard of man And still I just don’t know If you are a God to look up to When so many cried with their adieu: “He was the one our lord worked through” You took all the credit he gave you So you were the one that I blamed If only a culprit, if only a person to find Guilty of some crime A target for all our vindictive minds But nature has trumped us like currents that drag us beneath The surface of some stream When air as the answer escapes us We point fingers in unknown directions Like limbs that will flail out so desperate In water where struggle is useless Proving we’ve learnt not a thing From the man whose good praises we sing The past is containers of sand with our hands we sift through Between our fingers spill Grains from handfuls of moments he gave We try so hard to hold all of them but some manage still to escape In a windy dusty swirl That dances on streets so empty and wide Like the void that was left in our own lives Sunlit but empty on the inside With the shadows of thousands who’ll still try To shovel in tons of that stuff But in the back of their minds They know that there’ll never be enough To fill it up

Sleeping on the floor Woken by the call It could have been a mistake After all, we’re so far away From home and the morning His voice shakes in the glow On his faced pressed to the phone I swear the midnight traffic sighs On the street, through the window, outside I’m unable to cry Wondering if his heart was like mine Rapid in rhythm and Time just as he died Oh lord, where was I? London town, in a bed Fingers locked at the back of my head As I wait for time To bring a feeling that just won’t arrive Sleeping on the plane As workers in my brain Shun the truth, an embrace That could burn up and cripple my faith As I search for this Discipline, like fathers to their sons Please force my eyes To stare into this mess; this loss of life First Signs that you’re gone Come like symptoms from colds take too long ‘Cause at first you never know When something is wrong The guards inside me Still refuse to allow me to see So it hits me like a ton Of nothing I feel With all my powers, All my strength; it’s just no match for this Safety Switch It makes no sense for I have wept for so much less I was stuck in the traffic in Rome Feeling helpless and longing for home But they told me I couldn’t go I was emotional I was 21 but like a child I got mad and I cried So why can’t I feel like that now
